A High Court in Nairobi has sentenced former Kenya Army Major Peter Mwaura Mugure to life imprisonment after convicting him of the murder of his two young children and their mother Joyce Syombua in a case that shocked the nation.
The court through Justice Martin Muya imposed life sentences on all three counts of murder, ordering that the sentences run concurrently after finding that the offences warranted the maximum custodial punishment.
In delivering the sentence, the judge considered a victim impact statement presented by the victims’ family as well as submissions by the prosecution, which had urged the court to impose the death penalty.
The court noted that Mugure had shown “no iota of remorse” throughout the trial and described the killings as “barbaric.”
He further observed that the rising cases of femicide and infanticide in Kenya demanded stern punishment to deter similar crimes.
The court heard that on October 26, 2019, Mugure, who was then serving as a Major at the Laikipia Air Base, lured his family to the military installation under the guise of a family visit.
He murdered his two children before killing their mother.
Mugure then concealed the three bodies in the boot of his vehicle and transported them to a remote location, where he dumped them in an attempt to conceal the crime.
The life sentence brings to a close one of Kenya’s most disturbing family murder cases, with the court underscoring the need for justice for the victims and stronger deterrence against such heinous offences.
