A coalition of grassroots women from Nairobi County has called for an immediate end to the alleged harassment and intimidation of individuals and organisations that criticise the government or hold those in power accountable.
Speaking during a press conference in Nairobi on Tuesday, the women, drawn from chama groups, mama mboga associations, salon owners, caregivers, farmers, traders and community organisers, expressed concern over what they described as a shrinking civic space in Kenya.
The group said there was a growing trend of intimidation, harassment and attacks targeting citizens, activists and organisations advocating for transparency, accountability and good governance.
They maintained that every Kenyan has a constitutional right to express their views and question public officials without fear of reprisals.
The women urged the government and relevant authorities to protect fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression, assembly and association, saying these rights are essential to a democratic society.
They also appealed to leaders to embrace constructive criticism and strengthen dialogue with citizens instead of silencing dissenting voices.
The grassroots leaders reaffirmed their commitment to promoting accountability and civic participation, calling on all Kenyans to defend democratic values and uphold the rule of law.
