Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru is the new MP for Ol Kalou.
He won the seat yesterday after storming to a commanding victory over United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah.
By the time most polling stations had concluded tallying, Waweru had garnered more than 33,000 votes against his closest rival’s just over 5,000, signalling one of the most emphatic by-election victories in recent Kenyan political history.
The contest was widely viewed as a political showdown between President William Ruto’s UDA and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s newly formed DCP.
Born and raised in Ol Kalou Constituency in Nyandarua County, Waweru has built his political career from the grassroots.
He attended A.C. Primary School before proceeding to Utumishi Boys High School for his secondary education.
The new elect MP later enrolled at the University of Nairobi, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics, a field that equipped him with knowledge in agriculture, rural development and economic planning.
Before contesting the parliamentary seat, Waweru had already established himself as an experienced politician.
In 2013, he made history by becoming the first Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Karau Ward after winning on the then TNA ticket.
During his tenure, he earned a reputation as a grassroots mobiliser and community leader, strengthening his political network across Ol Kalou over more than a decade.
Following the death of Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho in March 2026, Waweru sought the vacant parliamentary seat under the DCP banner.
His candidature quickly transformed the by-election into a national political contest, with DCP leader Gachagua personally leading a high profile campaign alongside several opposition figures, including Nyandarua Senator John Methu and other allies, who traversed the constituency urging residents to reject the ruling party and back the opposition candidate.
The campaign also included prayer meetings and extensive grassroots mobilisation in the final days before the vote.
The campaign period, however, was marked by tension and controversy.
Opposition leaders repeatedly alleged that groups of hired goons disrupted DCP rallies, intimidated supporters and attempted to derail the campaign.
Gachagua also accused some rogue security officers and state operatives of interfering with the electoral process, claims that heightened political temperatures in the constituency.
Reports of violence, destruction of campaign materials and allegations of voter bribery dominated headlines in the days leading to the election.
Throughout the campaign as recorded by DNK-International, Waweru presented himself as a servant leader committed to improving roads, supporting farmers, empowering young people and women, creating employment opportunities and ensuring prudent utilisation of public resources.
He repeatedly promised to unite residents regardless of their political affiliation and pledged to provide effective representation in Parliament.
Among his memorable campaign remarks was his call for the people of Ol Kalou to vote without fear and to defend democracy through the ballot, maintaining that leadership should be determined by the will of the people rather than intimidation or state influence.
His campaign consistently portrayed the by-election as a referendum on good governance and the future political direction of the Mt Kenya region.
Although Waweru has maintained a relatively private family life, little public information has been disclosed regarding his marital status, reflecting his preference to keep family matters away from the political spotlight.
His overwhelming victory is widely seen as a significant boost for Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Political analysts have described the outcome as a major statement on the party’s growing influence in the Mt Kenya region and a demonstration of Waweru’s strong grassroots appeal.
His rise from village schools to county leadership and ultimately to Parliament underscores a political journey built on local networks, persistence and community engagement, making him one of the emerging political figures to watch in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
