A dormitory housing students at Abrar Madrassa in Milalani Shopping Centre, Msambweni Kwale County, was destroyed by fire early Friday morning, leaving property worth an unknown value reduced to ashes.
According to police, the incident was reported at Msambweni Police Station at about 7:50 a.m. by teacher Abdallah Said.
Officers who visited the scene established that the fire broke out at around 5:30 a.m. in one of the rooms before rapidly spreading to the rest of the dormitory.
Fortunately, all the students had already left for morning prayers at a nearby mosque when the fire erupted, sparing them from injury.
On returning, they joined members of the public in efforts to extinguish the blaze.
The fire caused the roof of the building to collapse, destroying beds, mattresses, bedding and the students’ personal belongings.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire had not been established by the time of reporting, while the value of the property destroyed was yet to be assessed.
Police have launched investigations into the incident.
