A police officer sustained serious knee injuries after he was allegedly assaulted by a man who resisted arrest during an operation targeting illicit brew in Nakwangwa area, Kiminini,Trans-Nzoia County.
The incident occurred on Friday when three officers from Kiminini Police Station were conducting a foot patrol.
According to a police report, Sergeant Paul Ogolah Barasa, accompanied by Police Constables David Edoket and Bonface Ronoh, received information from a village elder identified as Kimalen that a house near Nakwangwa Primary School was being used for the sale and consumption of chang’aa.
The officers proceeded to the house, where they reportedly found three people consuming suspected illicit brew.
A search of the premises resulted in the recovery of 30 litres of chang’aa from a bedroom.
The owner of the house, identified as 39 year old Patrick Ratango Onyuma, became aggressive and resisted arrest.
During the ensuing struggle, Onyuma is reported to have kicked Sergeant Barasa on the right knee, causing the officer to fall and become unable to walk.
The suspect was eventually overpowered with the assistance of members of the public and arrested before being escorted to Kiminini Police Station, where he was placed in custody.
Sergeant Barasa was taken to Kiminini Cottage Mission Hospital for medical attention, where doctors established that he had suffered ligament damage.
He was subsequently referred for specialised treatment and an MRI examination.
The 30 litres of recovered chang’aa were secured as an exhibit.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned at the Kitale Law Courts on Monday to face appropriate charges.
The case is being handled by Kiminini Police Station, with investigations continuing and a further progress report expected.
