Residents from Golbo Ward in Moyale Sub-County staged demonstrations on Wednesday,barricaded the Moyale-Marsabit Highway with stones, burning tyres and logs in protest over a planned formation of a management committee to secure land for the Sakuye community in Dabel area.
The protesters gathered at Wajir Junction disrupting traffic and causing unrest among motorists and pedestrians.
Police officers drawn from DCI Moyale, Sololo Police Station, Makutano-Sololo, Marsabit Central, BPU Moyale, QRU Marsabit and the National Police Reservists were deployed to contain the situation.
Attempts by the Moyale Deputy County Commissioner to calm the crowd through dialogue failed after the protesters became rowdy and pelted officers with stones.
Police used force to disperse the demonstrators as the situation escalated.
Twelve security officers sustained various injuries, including bruises and injuries.
A police vehicle, registration number GKC 135D, was also damaged, while a G3 rifle reportedly sustained trigger assembly damage.
Several passenger buses, trailers, private vehicles and a Kenya Power Land Cruiser were damaged after being attacked with stones.
The vehicles included Moyale Star Bus, Salama Bus, Abyssinia buses, Sorres Bus, Liban Bus, Royal Bus, Abuya Bus and Ambasa Liner, among others.
A reinforcement team from Marsabit Central, led by the Marsabit County Police Commander, arrived at about 2pm and helped restore order.
Normal traffic resumed at around 6pm.
Police said the area remained calm, although stones were still scattered along sections of the highway and were scheduled for removal.
Officers remained deployed to monitor the situation as investigations continued.
