Kilifi South MP Chonga forced to leave meeting under Police escort after heckling

By Our Correspondent, Kilifi.

A reconciliation meeting convened by Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga to resolve a dispute between two rival committees at Maweni Settlement Scheme was aborted on Saturday after residents strongly opposed a proposal to form a new committee.

The MP had brought together members of the two conflicting committees for a consultative and reconciliation meeting.

However, tensions rose after he attempted to constitute a new committee comprising representatives from both sides.

Community members heckled the MP and accused him of contributing to challenges facing the settlement scheme.

They further alleged that some of his nominees had grabbed and allocated several plots reportedly set aside for squatters.

As the situation became tense, the MP was forced to leave the venue under police escort for his safety.

Residents also criticised the decision to convene the meeting without prior consultation and without involving the Deputy County Commissioner and the Sub-County Security Team.

The meeting ended prematurely without the two rival committees reaching any resolution or agreement.
