Personality of the day:Michael Nyachae: Nyachae son denies stealing Sh1.2 Million from family company

By John Asango,Milimani Court.

Michael Moragia Nyachae, the son of the late former Cabinet minister and politician Simeon Nyachae, is a businessman and corporate leader who has spent much of his career managing and serving on the boards of companies associated with the Nyachae family business empire.

Born into one of Kenya’s prominent business and political families, Michael pursued higher education in the United States, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration from the State University of New York at Brockport and a Master of Business Administration from Howard University in Washington, DC.

His academic background in business administration prepared him for a career focused on corporate management, strategy and boardroom leadership.

Michael has held several senior positions in the private and public sectors.

He has served as a director of Sansora Bakers and Confectioners Limited and Almasi Beverages Limited, while also serving as chairman of the Kenya Development Corporation, Kisii Bottlers Limited and St Andrews School, Turi.

He has held other directorships, including at Associated Auto Centre Limited and the Cereal Growers Association.

His corporate career was further boosted when he was appointed chairman of the Development Bank of Kenya, adding to his profile as an experienced businessman and boardroom leader.

His professional record has largely been associated with corporate governance, strategic management and the administration of businesses and institutions.

Michael’s career is also closely linked to Sansora Group, one of the companies associated with the Nyachae family.

The business interests of the Nyachae family were built over many years by his late father, Simeon Nyachae, who rose from the public service to become one of Kenya’s most influential politicians and businessmen.

The family’s commercial interests have included manufacturing, milling, beverages, agriculture and other investments.

Michael has therefore been part of the generation responsible for managing and sustaining the family’s business interests following the death of his father.

His experience in corporate leadership has seen him occupy influential positions in both family linked enterprises and other organisations.

His otherwise established corporate career as established by DNK-International came under scrutiny on Friday when he was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts over allegations that he stole Sh1.2 million from Sansora Group Limited, a company associated with his family.

Michael appeared before trial magistrate Caroline Nyaguthie Mugo and denied the charge.

The prosecution alleges that Sh1,226,036 belonging to Sansora Group was stolen on diverse dates between March 28, 2019 and September 28, 2021 in Kisii County.

Through his lawyers, led by Assah Nyakundi, Michael disputed the allegations and argued that the dispute was essentially a family matter.

His legal team told the court that he was involved in managing the affairs of the company and questioned how he could have stolen from an organisation whose affairs he was responsible for overseeing.

The lawyers also asked the court to grant him lenient bail terms, arguing that he was a member of a distinguished family and would not abscond from the proceedings.

The court subsequently granted him a cash bail of Sh50,000 or an alternative bond of Sh200,000 pending the hearing and determination of the case.

The matter is expected to return to court for further proceedings, with Michael maintaining his innocence.

The court case has brought renewed public attention to Michael’s career and his role in the Nyachae family’s extensive business interests.

While his father built a formidable reputation in both politics and business, Michael has largely carved his own identity through corporate leadership, business administration and boardroom positions, becoming one of the family members involved in carrying forward the commercial legacy of the Nyachae family.
