Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has launched the fourth edition of the Governor Wavinya Cup, bringing together 650 teams and more than 13,000 players from all 40 wards across the county.
The tournament was launched at the White Grounds and seeks to identify, nurture and promote football talent among young people while providing them with a pathway to higher levels of competition.
This year’s edition has expanded beyond football to include mental health awareness and resilience programmes, voluntary HIV counselling and testing, career mentorship and skills training.
Wavinya said the initiatives are intended to empower young people with practical skills, promote healthy lifestyles and prepare participants for opportunities beyond the football pitch.
“We are building Machakos into a premier sports incubator in East Africa and transforming our home into a world class sports tourism hub where talent is discovered, nurtured, polished and exported to the world’s biggest arenas,” she said.
The tournament’s theme, “From the Ward to the World,” reflects the county government’s ambition to create a structured pathway for talented players to progress from grassroots competitions to national, continental and international stages.
She said the
tournament forms part of her administration’s broader plan to position Machakos as a leading sports incubator and sports tourism destination in the region.
With hundreds of teams competing across the county, the fourth edition is expected to offer thousands of young footballers an opportunity to showcase their abilities while benefiting from mentorship and community empowerment programmes.
