Police in Garissa have arrested a 40 year old man suspected of using a SIM-swap scam to fraudulently transfer money from a trader’s mobile money account.
The suspect, identified as Edwin Mugoi, was arrested on Thursday after Mohamed Ali Sirat, a shopkeeper in Bulla Hodhan, raised an alarm over a suspected fraudulent transaction at his shop near Posta area.
According to the police report, Mugoi allegedly approached Sirat at around 6:30pm and introduced himself as a Safaricom agent.
He reportedly claimed that he wanted to upgrade the trader’s Till number line to a new line with lower transaction charges.
Police said the suspect instead swapped the victim’s line and transferred money fraudulently to another line.
The trader became suspicious and alerted police officers, who arrested the suspect and escorted him to Garissa Police Station.
During the arrest, police recovered several items from Mugoi, including assorted SIM cards, four mobile phones, two SIM-card registration gadgets and four chargers.
The items are suspected to have been used in the commission of the alleged offences.
Police said identification parades are expected to be conducted, while the recovered phones and SIM cards will be subjected to forensic analysis as investigations continue.
The case is being handled by the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Office (SCCIO), Garissa.
