Uchaguzi 2027/325 days: Security reshuffle reportedly in the offing in Nyanza amid concerns over political goons

By Our Reporter, Kisumu.

As Kenya heads towards the 2027 General Election, a possible security reshuffle in the Nyanza region is reportedly being considered amid growing concerns over political violence and the emergence of organised groups linked to political activities.

Sources within security circles claim that changes to the regional police command could be announced soon, although there has been no official confirmation from the National Police Service.

The speculation has partly been fuelled by the absence of Nyanza Regional Police Commander Evelyn Nyamohanga Gisiri at the burial of Risper Pamela Mwajuma Onyango, wife of Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations John Onyango, in Uriri, Migori County, on Saturday.

The ceremony was attended by senior security officials, including Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat and Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin.

Gisiri was reportedly represented by her deputy, Kerich.

The National Police Service structure places Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira under the Nyanza Regional Command.

Unconfirmed reports within security circles suggest that Gisiri could be moved, with Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud among the names being mentioned as a possible replacement.

There is also speculation that Coast Regional Police Commander Nuno could be transferred to Nairobi.
However, the reported changes remain unconfirmed, and no official deployment or transfer order had been announced by the National Police Service by Sunday.

The speculation comes at a time when security preparations have intensified in Nyanza, a region expected to remain politically significant as the country approaches the 2027 elections.

Earlier this month, authorities announced heightened security preparations ahead of President William Ruto’s tour of Nyanza.

The National Police Service has previously undertaken senior-command reshuffles, with the latest major changes affecting regional commanders announced in May 2026.
