Man arrested over alleged Sh7 Million fraud involving Treasury PS Kiptoo

By Our Correspondent,Nairobi.

A man has been arrested in Nairobi over an alleged fraud scheme in which a businessman claims he was duped into handing over Sh7 million after receiving a call from an individual posing as Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo.

The suspect, identified as Mike Kipkorir Biwott, was arrested at an Equity Bank branch along Parliament Road after the complainant reportedly became suspicious when he was asked to hand over an additional Sh5 million.

According to a police report filed at Parliament Police Station, the complainant, identified as Mohamed Abdullahi Dima, reported that he received a call on September 30 from a man identified as Chris Kiptoo, who allegedly presented himself as a Principal Secretary at the National Treasury.

The caller reportedly requested Sh7 million and informed Dima that his personal assistant would collect the money.

Dima met the suspect at the bank manager’s office at Equity Bank’s Parliament Road branch, where the suspect allegedly collected the money in US dollars over two days.

Police said the suspect contacted the complainant approximately one week later and demanded a further Sh5 million.

The additional request reportedly raised Dima’s suspicions, although he agreed to meet the suspect at the same location.

During the meeting, the complainant, with the assistance of two police officers guarding the bank, apprehended the suspect before contacting Parliament Police Station for further assistance.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and escorted to the station, where the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers are handling the matter.

Police indicated that the case was pending further investigations.
