Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has defended the decision by a section of Mulembe leaders to back President William Rutoโ€™s re election bid, saying their position does not bar the Luhya community from the presidency but reflects a strategic choice for the moment.

Speaking in Sirisia Constituency during the funeral service of the late Wilson Muyala, Governor Lusaka said most Luhya presidential hopefuls were not adequately prepared to mount a serious bid for the countryโ€™s top seat at this time.

โ€œWe are not saying a Luhya cannot be President. What we are saying is that, for now, we are not ready. That is why we should support President Ruto as we plan strategically for 2032,โ€ Lusaka said.

The Governor urged Luhya leaders to take time to reorganise, build unity, and develop a clear roadmap for future national leadership, rather than rushing into contests that may weaken the communityโ€™s bargaining power.

Lusaka called on leaders from the region to rally behind President Ruto, arguing that political alignment with the national government was critical to unlocking development at the grassroots.

โ€œThe kind of leadership you elect and the alliances you form determine the level of development your area receives,โ€ he noted, adding that cooperation with the national government was already bearing fruit.

However, the Bungoma Governor took a swipe at some Mulembe politicians, accusing them of political double-speak, publicly criticising the Ruto administration while privately engaging it for personal gain.

โ€œSome leaders pretend to attack the government during the day, yet at night they are negotiating deals for themselves. Very soon, we will name those leaders who benefit quietly but shout loudly in public,โ€ Lusaka warned.

He praised the government for its development record in the region, citing the construction of 12 modern markets as evidence of President Rutoโ€™s commitment to uplifting local economies.
