Murang’a Seal captain Joe Waithira has been crowned the SportPesa League Player of the Month for December 2025, following a string of outstanding performances that helped revive his side’s season.
Waithira earned the accolade after a prolific December in which he scored four goals in three matches, emerging as one of the league’s most influential players during the period.
His performances also included eight shots on target, four chances created, and a 45 per cent shot accuracy, underlining his all-round attacking impact.
Reacting to the recognition, Waithira expressed his joy at being honoured, “It feels nice to win this award. Every player would love to have it,” Waithira said.
The Murang’a Seal forward attributed both his individual success and the team’s form to hard work on the training ground and strong backing from the technical bench.
“The effort we put in during training and the encouragement and motivation from our coach really helped us. This is football and anything can happen,” he added.
Murang’a Seal went on a 10-match unbeaten run during the period before suffering a narrow 3–2 defeat to Gor Mahia, a match in which Waithira was also on the scoresheet.
Waithira also welcomed the SportPesa initiative, noting that recognising players’ efforts is a significant morale booster within the league.
“This is something that has not been experienced for a long time. Players and coaches are putting in a lot of effort, and such recognition means a lot,” he said.
The December shortlist also included Jimmy Owili (Mara Sugar FC) and Samuel Semo (AFC Leopards), with Waithira emerging as the standout performer.
In an emotional gesture, the Seal captain dedicated the award to Mzee Kiangani, a loyal Murang’a Seal supporter who passed away at the age of 71.
“I thank God for this achievement and dedicate the award to the late Mzee Kiangani, who was a loyal fan of the club and he passed at the age of 71, after his death I changed my jersey number to 71,” Waithira said.
For emerging top, Waithira received a customized SportPesa League Player of the Month trophy and a cash prize of KSh 50,000.
