A man lost his life today morning after becoming trapped inside a borehole after he rescued another man in Mayanja area, Bungoma South Sub County.
The incident occurred at Nabuala “A” Village in Marakaru Location.
According to police, the matter was reported by the area Assistant Chief Agapetus Wafula.
The deceased was identified as Edward Naliakho, aged approximately 40.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Naliakho voluntarily entered a borehole within a private residential compound belonging to Wilson Ogutu Momanyi to rescue Emmanuel Akhayia, who had earlier descended into the borehole to remove plastic materials blocking water access.
After successfully rescuing Akhayia, Naliakho experienced difficulty while trying to exit the borehole and became trapped inside.
Police officers from Mayanja Vitunguu Police Station, detectives from Bungoma South Sub-County, and a fire brigade team led by County Fire Director Peter Cherui Ndiema rushed to the scene and mounted a rescue operation.
The fire brigade managed to retrieve Naliakho from the borehole and he was rushed to Nabuala Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The scene was secured and documented by crime scene investigators, while the body was transferred to Bungoma County Referral Hospital Mortuary for preservation pending postmortem examination.
Police have opened an inquiry into the incident, which is being handled by the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Office (SCCIO), Bungoma South.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution when dealing with boreholes and other confined spaces, noting the dangers involved without proper equipment and training.
