Police in Thika West,Kiambu County, are investigating an abduction incident that has ended in tragedy following the recovery of a body in Mugutha area.
According to a follow up report filed at Thika Police Station,the incident was initially reported by Samuel Gacheru Gitonga, a mechanic based in Thika town.
Samuel reported that on Thursday while at his workplace, he received a phone call from his father, Joseph Gitonga Kahwai, a 75 year old businessman residing in Kamenu Ward, requesting Sh 20,000 to address what was described as an emergency.
After sending the money, Samuel attempted to call back to confirm receipt, but the phone was unreachable.
Growing concerned, Samuel contacted his mother and sister, who both confirmed they had also received similar calls.
Shortly thereafter, unknown persons allegedly contacted the family, threatening to harm the victim if additional money was not sent.
Police investigations revealed that the phone number used was initially traced to Maanzoni Lodge.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) tracked the signal as it moved through several locations, including Nairobi, Utawala, Ruai, Kamulu, Mwihoko in Githurai, Kiriri, Ruiru, before the phone was switched off within the NIBS area in Juja at approximately 11:06 p.m.
A search operation was conducted but later called off at around 2:00 a.m. after officers failed to locate the suspect or victim.
Today at about 10:00 a.m., police received information that a body had been recovered in Mugutha area.
The body was positively identified as Stephen Gitonga Gacheru.
