Calm Restored After Ukari Mixed Secondary School Students Stage Peaceful Protest

Police in Migori County today quickly contained a peaceful student demonstration involving Ukari Mixed Secondary School in Suna East with no injuries reported.

According to a report filed at Migori Police Station the incident was reported by Suna North Chief Wycliffe Onyango, who indicated that students had left the school compound and were heading toward Migori Town to present their grievances to Ministry of Education offices.

Officers from Migori Police Station, led by the OCS, intercepted the students at Chuma Mbili area in Lower Kakrao Sub-location along the Migori–Awendo road.

They were estimated to be about 200, were demonstrating peacefully while holding tree leaves. After engagement with police, they agreed to return to school.

The Ministry of Education dispatched Suna East Quality Assurance Officer Omega Aguvitsa, who addressed the students and assured them that their concerns would be handled.

Their grievances which they raised included increased school fees, withdrawal of scholarships for some students, lack of water at the school, alleged harassment and caning of students by the principal, substandard food, and a demand for the transfer of the school principal, among other issues.

Students agreed to remain calm as the matters are addressed. No injuries or damage were reported during the incident.
