Panic gripped Matungulu Boys High School on Sunday night after a wave of students’ unrest erupted into arson, leaving four dormitories reduced to ashes and hundreds of learners displaced.
The incident was reported shortly after midnight.
It was reported that an unknown number of students went on a rampage at around 10:15pm, torching Ghana, Morocco, Tanzania and Ivory dormitories, which collectively housed about 350 students.
Police officers from Kangundo Police Station, accompanied by DCI officers, swiftly responded to the scene at Ndunduni area in Kanzalu Location.
By the time security teams arrived, the dormitories had already been completely razed down.
In addition to the fires, the school canteen was vandalized, with goods of unknown value looted, compounding the scale of destruction.
The situation was eventually brought under control by police, while the Machakos County Government Fire Brigade managed to extinguish the blaze.
Authorities say the cause of the unrest remains unclear and investigations are ongoing.
During the chaos, one student sustained a cut injury on the leg after coming into contact with an iron sheet.
He was rushed to Ndunduni Dispensary, where he is receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
The school has since been placed under police guard and is expected to be closed, as authorities assess the damage.
The value of the destroyed property is yet to be established.
