An intelligence-led undercover operation to arrest a suspected drug trafficker in Nairobi’s River Road area ended in chaos on Wednesday night after a hostile crowd confronted police officers, leaving one officer injured and the suspect escaping.
According to a report recorded at Central Police,the incident occurred at about 9:30pm while undercover officers were conducting an operation within the busy River Road area.
The officers managed to arrest a suspect believed to be involved in drug trafficking.
However, upon arrest, the suspect raised an alarm, drawing the attention of several matatu touts locally known as kamagiras,drivers from nearby matatu Saccos, and other civilians.
The crowd reportedly turned hostile and confronted the officers, causing a commotion.
During the confrontation, one of the matatu touts allegedly threw a beer bottle at the officers, injuring Corporal Kathoya Athuman of Central Police Station.
The officer sustained a deep cut on the face near the right eye.
He was rushed to Ngara Medical Complex, where he was stitched, treated, and later discharged in fair condition.
Amid the confusion, the suspect managed to escape.
Police continue doing there investigations and efforts to trace the suspect and those involved in the attack intensify.
