Tension High in Isiolo After Banditry Killing Sparks Ethnic Unrest

By Our Correspondent,Isiolo.

Some parts of Isiolo county are on high security alert following rising tensions among ethnic communities in Isiolo Sub-County.

This is after a recent banditry incident that left a herdsboy dead.

According to police reports, the situation escalated after a herdsboy from Somali community was fatally shot during a banditry attack in the Akadeli area.

The incident was reported yesterday.

According to police reports, the killing triggered fear and anger among residents, particularly within the Somali community.

On February 1, 2026, shortly after the burial of the slain herdsboy, a group of angry mourners and sympathisers allegedly invaded several residential areas, including LMD, Kambi Turkana, Burat, KMC and Akadeli.

The group reportedly attempted to destroy houses, accusing residents in those areas of involvement in banditry activities and harbouring armed criminals.

Police officers from Isiolo and Kulamawe Police Stations, supported by National Police Reservists (NPR), responded swiftly to the unrest and managed to restore calm.

No injuries or fatalities were reported during the incident, and normalcy was temporarily restored.

However, tension remains high in the affected areas, with some residents reportedly fleeing their homes over fears of imminent retaliatory attacks.

Security officers have since been deployed on high alert to prevent further lawlessness and protect lives and property.

Authorities say they are closely monitoring the situation and will issue further updates as developments unfold.
