Tanzania pledges to bolster judicial independence, apply AI in courts

By Xinhua.

The Tanzanian government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening judicial independence as a cornerstone of nation-building, Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi said Sunday.

Representing President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the national Law Day celebrations in Dodoma, Nchimbi said judicial independence is essential for the courts to discharge their constitutional mandates and foster national prosperity.

Nchimbi noted the government will continue to improve court infrastructure, strengthen human resources, and enhance staff welfare to bring justice services closer to the people.

Chief Justice George Masaju said the judiciary is expanding its use of technology to boost efficiency.

He revealed that an artificial intelligence-based system is being developed to record, transcribe, and translate court proceedings in real time.

The system will significantly reduce delays and inaccuracies in manual record-keeping, marking a step forward in modernizing Tanzania’s legal system, Masaju said
