Fuel Tanker Overturns Near Malaba

A diesel tanker destined for Kampala , Uganda lost control and overturned this morning at Ikapolok area along the Bungoma – Malaba highway about 4kms from the busy Malaba border.

Police had a difficult time controlling traffic and preventing a surging mob from syphoning the diesel.

Teso North Deputy OCPD Chris Bahati Ojwang’ told the press that police have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident.

Bahati said initial investigations show that the tanker, which was transporting 30,000 litres of diesel had developed mechanical problems which was rectified.

However in an attempt to jump start the engine, the driver allegedly lost control.

Busia county government firefighters arrived immediately and put off the fire which could have burnt the truck and its products.

Members of the public had also mobilised themselves in a bid to help in putting off the fire.

The Deputy OCPD expressed the need for the sensitization of members of the public on the dangers of syphoning fuel regardless of whether or not it’s flammable.

He appealed to residents to avoid syphoning fuel when such accidents occur, warning that such behavior puts their lives and those of their families in danger.

He said they are holding the driver of the truck to assist with their investigations.

By 1:00 pm arrangements were underway to tow the truck from the scene.
