Stolen child rescued as police crack child theft syndicate spanning western Kenya

By Our Reporter,Kisumu.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kisumu East have successfully rescued a two year old child and dismantled a suspected child theft syndicate operating across several counties in Western Kenya.

The operation followed a missing child report lodged at Kasagam Police Station on February 7 after a toddler disappeared from Nyalenda “A” slums.

Acting on intelligence and a nationwide police signal circulated to all stations, officers closed in on leads pointing to Vihiga County.

Investigators from Kisumu East received actionable information from Kilingili Police Station in Sabatia Sub-County, Vihiga County, linking the disappearance to a syndicate of women suspected of stealing children within Vihiga and neighbouring counties, including Kisumu, Kakamega and Nandi.

A joint operation led DCI officers to Kilingili Police Station, where three women Margaret Mmbone,Shavin Mmbone and Emmah Imali were found in custody.

All the three are having active cases related to child theft in Sabatia SubCounty.

Following thorough interrogation, the suspects led officers to another accomplice.

Police teams from Kisumu East DCI and Kilingili Police Station proceeded to a homestead in the Kilingili area, where they arrested Lenah Kadika Amayu.

She was found in possession of the missing child, Adrian Kyle, aged two years.

The suspect and the rescued child were escorted to Kasagam Police Station, where the toddler was positively identified by his mother, Brenda Atieno Odhiambo.

Residents of Nyalenda “A” and “B” also identified the suspect, alleging she had previously gained their trust by spending nights in their homes before mysteriously disappearing with the child.

The rescued child has since been reunited with his mother, who was escorted to hospital for medical check-ups.

Police say investigations are ongoing, with more details expected as the case progresses.
