A police officer attached to Juja Police Station sustained injuries on Monday night after a trained police dog turned against him during a routine patrol within Juja.
According to a police report recorded on Monday night, the incident was reported by Cpl. Francis Kioko (No. 65617). The injured officer Corporal and a certified police dog (POLDOG) handler, was on patrol together with other officers when the incident occurred.
The report indicated that the police dog, identified as Bliss, suddenly broke loose and attempted to attack a civilian along the patrol route.
As the officer moved in to restrain the animal, the dog turned on him and bit him on the right leg, causing injuries.
Fellow officers swiftly intervened, restrained the dog, and safely returned it to its kennel.
The injured officer was immediately rushed to hospital, where he received anti-rabies vaccination and other medical treatment.
He was reported to be in fair condition at the time of treatment.
Police have noted the incident and appropriate internal procedures are expected to follow regarding the handling and control of police service dogs during operations.
