From GSU Frontlines to National Security Voice: The Making of George Musamali

By Our Reporter,Nairobi

Renowned security analyst George Musamali has emerged as one of Kenya’s most respected voices on matters of national security, counter terrorism and public safety.

This he has achieved from his years of frontline service and elite training within the country’s security apparatus.

Musamali, believed to be in his 50’s is a product of Kenya’s disciplined security training pipeline.

He is reported to have undertaken professional security and intelligence related studies alongside advanced tactical courses, forming the academic foundation that later complemented his operational experience.

His career in uniform began when he joined the General Service Unit (GSU), an elite paramilitary wing of the National Police Service tasked with high risk internal security operations.

During his time in GSU, Musamali in an earlier talk with Daily News Kenya-International he said that he underwent some of the most rigorous training offered to Kenyan security officers, including counter terrorism response, VIP protection, close quarter battle, tactical firearms handling, intelligence led operations and hostile environment survival.

Sources familiar with his service say he also participated in joint drills with regional and international security teams, sharpening his exposure to modern security threats.

After excelling in his training and proving his mettle as a natural leader, his exceptional performance earned him elevation to the role of instructor at the GSU Training School, where he went on to shape and mentor others for an impressive six-year tenure.

He served in several sensitive deployments considered among the riskiest in the country, including counter terrorism operations, high threat VIP protection assignments and rapid response missions during periods of heightened insecurity.

By the time he exited the unit, Musamali had risen through the ranks to a senior non commissioned level, leaving GSU in the mid 2010’s after more than a decade of service.

After leaving active duty, Musamali transitioned into private security consultancy, leveraging both his operational experience and analytical depth.

He quickly gained prominence as a security expert, advising corporates, NGOs, diplomatic missions, learning institutions, media houses and private entities on risk assessment, crisis management, terrorism prevention and protective security.

His consultancy work has also extended to community security awareness and institutional capacity building.

Beyond consultancy, Musamali became a familiar face and voice in national discourse through media analysis, where his breakdown of terror threats, crime trends and policing challenges has helped shape public understanding of security issues.

His commentary has often emphasized intelligence led policing, inter agency coordination and the importance of community trust in preventing attacks.

His analysis has at times influenced national debate, particularly in moments of crisis.

Following the recent perceived security scare involving President William Ruto during his tour of northern Kenya and coast region, Musamali cautioned against politicizing security lapses, instead calling for strengthened close protection protocols, better advance intelligence and continuous threat reassessment in volatile regions.

He noted that “security is not a one off deployment but a continuous process that adapts to emerging risks.”

Among his most cited advice is his consistent call for vigilance without panic.

“Terror thrives where systems are weak, not where people are alert,” he has said in past commentary, urging citizens to work with security agencies while also demanding accountability and professionalism.

He has also argued that modern security threats require investment in intelligence, technology and training rather than reactionary force alone.

Colleagues and observers describe Musamali as a disciplined professional shaped by the GSU training but refined by years of study and field exposure.

His journey from elite paramilitary service to national security commentator has made him a bridge between operational policing and public understanding of security dynamics.

As Kenya continues to confront evolving threats from terrorism and banditry to political violence,George Musamali remains a central figure in explaining, critiquing and proposing solutions within the country’s security architecture, earning his place as one of the nation’s most trusted security analysts.

George Musamali currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Executive Protection Services Limited, where he leads the firm in delivering high-level security and safety consultancy services with precision and professionalism.
