Goons Storm Raila Hotel in Kisumu

Police in Kisumu County on Friday evening repelled a large group of goons numbering about 500 who attempted to force their way into the Grand Royal Swiss Hotel in Riat,Kisumu County that’s owned by the late ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The incident left one person injured and property damaged.

According to an incident report filed at Dago Police Station and Riat Police Post, the disturbance occurred at between 4:20pm and 4:30pm.

Robinson Murias, a security manager at the hotel alerted police that hundreds of attackers were breaking the hotel’s main gate without authorization.

Officers rushed to the scene at Riat Centre along the Kisumu–Kakamega Highway and found an estimated 500 individuals hurling stones and damaging the main gate in an apparent attempt to storm the premises.

Police fired several warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd, prompting the attackers to flee some on motorcycles and others on foot towards Kisumu City.

The attackers also vandalized a Toyota Noah where they smashed the rear and driver side windscreens.

The vehicle’s driver, George Otieno, sustained facial injuries and was robbed of two mobile phones, a wallet containing ATM cards and cash, identification documents, and bags with assorted clothes.

Police confirmed that two officers discharged ammunition during the operation.

Reinforcements from Kisumu East and Kisumu Central sub-counties helped secure the area, after which crime scene personnel processed the scene.

Police have established investigations over the incident.
