Residents of Mandera County were today left shaken after armed attackers ambushed a commercial vehicle along the Kotulo–Elwak road.
They assaulted the driver and stole personal items in what police have described as a robbery incident now under active investigation.
According to a report filed at Kotulo Police Station, the incident occurred this morning when Ibrahim Ibrein, a resident of Kotulo, alerted police via phone that his driver, Farhan Ibrahim Abdow, had been attacked while driving a Mitsubishi Fuso lorry from Kotulo toward Elwak.
The driver reportedly encountered a makeshift roadblock constructed using stones between Dabacity and Bore.
Upon stopping, the vehicle was confronted by several unknown individuals dressed in military style attire and armed with rifles.
The assailants ordered the occupants out of the vehicle, confiscated their mobile phones, and forcibly escorted them about 100 metres into nearby bushes.
While being frisked, the victims lost a Samsung A16 mobile phone valued at KSh 16,000, national identity cards, and cash amounting to Sh 5,000.
During the ordeal, the driver was struck with a rifle butt, sustaining injuries to the eye area.
The attackers then vanished into the bush, leaving the victims shaken and injured.
After the assailants fled, the victims returned to their vehicle and continued their journey to Mandera, where the injured driver sought medical attention.
Police officers from Kotulo were immediately
deployed to comb the area in an effort to deter further incidents and track down the suspects.
