Veteran politician Andrew Adipo Okuome has built a reputation in Kenyan politics as a symbol of resilience, patience and unwavering loyalty to his political ideals.
Known across Homa Bay County and the wider Nyanza region for his determination, Okuome’s journey to Parliament is widely regarded as one of the most remarkable political stories in Kenya.
He pursued the Karachuonyo parliamentary seat for decades before eventually clinching victory late in life.
Okuome was born and raised in Karachuonyo in Homa Bay County.
He grew up in a humble rural environment that shaped his outlook on education, public service and community development.
Although his exact date of birth is not widely publicized, he became one of the oldest politicians elected to the National Assembly after winning the Karachuonyo parliamentary seat in the 2017 General Election.
His election marked the climax of a political dream he had pursued for nearly four decades.

From records seen by Daily News Kenya-International shows that Okuome attended Kisii High School for his secondary education before travelling abroad for higher studies in the United States.
He pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree specializing in accounting and economics at the University of Maryland and later undertook further studies at Michigan State University where he also trained in communication and economics.
His academic background equipped him with strong financial and administrative skills that later defined his professional career.
Before entering active politics, Okuome established himself as a respected professional in financial management and administration.
He served in several key institutions both locally and internationally, including the East African Community where he worked as a Principal Accountant, the Kenya Airports Authority where he served as Chief Accountant, and later with international development organizations such as the International Livestock Centre for Africa and UNICEF where he worked as an Administrative and Finance Officer.
His experience in these institutions helped him develop expertise in economic management, governance and development planning.

Okuome first ventured into politics in the 1980s when he began contesting the Karachuonyo parliamentary seat.
However, his early political journey was marked by repeated defeats.
Despite the setbacks, he remained determined and continued participating in political contests across several election cycles, becoming widely known as a persistent candidate who refused to abandon his political ambitions.
His persistence finally paid off in 2017 when he won the Karachuonyo seat on the ticket of the Orange Democratic Movement, securing a historic victory that made him one of the oldest first time Members of Parliament in Kenya.
His political rise was closely linked to the influence of Raila Odinga, the late leader of ODM and one of Kenya’s most influential political figures then.
Okuome has long been considered a loyal supporter of Raila during his life time and a firm believer in the ODM political ideology that has dominated Luo Nyanza politics for decades.
His closeness to Raila strengthened his standing within the party and helped him navigate the often complex political environment in Nyanza and Homa Bay County.
Within the ODM party and the Luo Nyanza political landscape, Okuome has been regarded as a respected elder statesman who commands influence due to his long political experience and loyalty to the party.
He has often played a stabilizing role in regional politics, advocating unity within the party while supporting ODM’s broader political agenda in Homa Bay County, one of the party’s strongest support bases.
As a Member of Parliament, Okuome has focused his leadership on development issues affecting Karachuonyo Constituency.
Through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), he has overseen projects aimed at improving school infrastructure, supporting youth empowerment programmes, expanding rural electrification and improving road networks within the constituency.
Education has remained one of his key priorities, and he has frequently spoken in Parliament about the need for timely government funding to support schools and ensure quality education for Kenyan students.
In the National Assembly, Okuome has served in committees dealing with finance, planning and trade, contributing to debates on national economic policy, budgeting and development planning.
Drawing from his professional background in accounting and finance, he has consistently advocated for prudent management of public resources and increased investment in community development projects.
Okuome’s political survival in the competitive Nyanza political arena has been attributed to his calm leadership style, grassroots engagement and ability to build alliances within local politics.
Even after decades of electoral defeats, he remained active in community leadership and party politics, which helped maintain his relevance and eventually secure electoral victory.
Away from politics, Okuome is known as a private family man who has largely kept details of his marital life and family away from the public eye.
However, those close to him describe him as a disciplined leader who values education, integrity and service to society.
Throughout his career, Okuome has also become known for remarks that emphasize responsible leadership and peaceful politics.
He has frequently urged young people not to allow themselves to be manipulated by politicians into engaging in violence during elections, arguing that politics should focus on development and service to the people.
Today, the story of Andrew Adipo Okuome stands as a powerful testament to perseverance in Kenyan politics.
From a trained accountant who worked in major institutions to a veteran politician who waited decades for electoral success, his journey demonstrates the value of patience, loyalty and commitment to public service.
His rise from repeated political defeats to becoming the Member of Parliament for Karachuonyo remains one of the most inspiring political stories to emerge from Homa Bay County and the broader Nyanza region.
