Thieves break into vehicle in Maralal, steal Sh.400,000

A man in Maralal lost Sh 400,000 to thieves who broke into his vehicle moments after he withdrew money from KCB bank in the town.

According to a report filed at Maralal Police Station yesterday in the evening,
the incident was reported by the complainant, Abdi Leparmarai, a resident of Maralal Township.

He told police that at around 2:00 pm he withdrew Sh 500,000 over the counter at KCB Bank Maralal Branch.

He later drove to SUPA SACCO intending to deposit Sh 100,000. Before entering the SACCO premises, he left KSh 400,000 hidden behind the driver’s seat compartment of his Toyota Land Cruiser and locked the vehicle.

However, after completing his transaction and returning to the vehicle, he discovered that the co-driver’s door lock had been tampered with and Sh 400,000 was missing.

A quick review of CCTV footage from SUPA SACCO revealed that the victim had been closely trailed by a grey saloon car as he left the KCB Bank compound.

Investigations further established that a medium built man followed him into the SACCO premises to monitor his movements, while another suspect remained outside and broke into the vehicle before escaping with the cash.

Police said one of the suspects’ faces was clearly captured on CCTV, which may help detectives identify and track down the perpetrators.

The case is currently under investigation by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Samburu Central, who have launched efforts to trace the suspects and the vehicle used in the operation.

Police have urged members of the public to exercise caution when withdrawing large sums of money from banks, as criminals increasingly trail victims before executing such thefts.
