An off duty police officer attached to the Quick Response Unit (QRU) in Garissa County has died after being attacked by a mob in Nairobi’s Mowlem area,police have confirmed.
According to a report made at Mowlem Police Station on Sunday,the deceased has been identified as Police Constable John Muya Karume.
The officer was attached to the QRU headquarters in Garissa County but had travelled to Nairobi while on sick leave to undergo medical review.
Police reports indicate that Karume, who resided with his family in the Baraka area of Mowlem, left his home on March 13, 2026, at around 4:00 p.m. and did not return.
His spouse, Linet Wakarima Wanjiru, later reported his disappearance.
In a separate report from the QRU headquarters in Garissa, it was confirmed that the officer had been granted 14 days of sick off-duty beginning March 7, 2026, to undergo medical review and further check-up at Nairobi West Hospital after being diagnosed with lower back pain.
His wife reported to her husband’s bosses in Gatrisa on Sunday at around 3:00 p.m. that her husband had passed away.
Investigations later linked the death to a mob injustice incident previously reported at Mowlem in Nairobi.
Detectives from the DCI in Dandora have taken over the probe to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal attack.
Police say investigations are ongoing and a progress report will be issued as inquiries continue.
