The frequent collapse of buildings under construction in Nairobi has been termed a governance issue rather than an accident by a lobby group known as Mtetezi.
In a press statement signed by its convener, Francis Awino, the group accused the Nairobi County Government’s planning department of alleged corruption and negligence in approving substandard buildings that later collapse during construction.
The group has called on relevant authorities, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), to launch investigations into the city’s planning department, particularly targeting officers mandated to approve building projects.
They argue that some of the approvals have led to the construction of unsafe structures, some of which have collapsed and resulted in loss of lives.
