Butula set for University campus

A major boost to higher education in western Kenya was marked yesterday following the official handover of land and assets to facilitate the establishment of a new university campus in Butula.

The event, presided over by Beatrice Muganda Inyangala, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Higher Education and Research, took place at the Benga University College of Education and Research Development Constituent College of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.

The ceremony saw BUCERED officially transfer its assets and land to Masinde Muliro University, paving the way for the establishment of the Butula Campus,an initiative expected to significantly expand access to university education in Busia County.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Inyangala lauded the move as a critical step in decentralizing higher education and bringing learning opportunities closer to local communities.

The function was also attended by the Principal Administrative secretary (PAS) in the executive office of the Presidency who is also a Gubernatorial aspirant for Busia in 2027 Arthur Osiya,university’s Vice Chancellor, Solomon Shibairo, Butula Member of Parliament Joseph Maero Oyula, former MP Christine Mango, as well as several former and serving Members of the Busia County Assembly.

Leaders present led by Osiya hailed the development as a transformative milestone that will not only improve access to higher education but also stimulate economic growth and innovation in the region.

“The establishment of the Butula Campus underscores a broader national commitment to strengthening education infrastructure and empowering communities through knowledge and research,”said Osiya.
