A Nairobi court has allowed police to detain two Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers and four other suspects for 10 days pending investigations into an alleged planned robbery targeting a senior military officer.
The six suspects appeared before Milimani trial magistrate Paul Mutai at the Milimani Law Courts, where the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had sought custodial orders to hold them as investigations continue.
In the application, police told the court that the first and third respondents are believed to be serving KDF officers, while the second respondent is a civilian working as a mechanic at Kahawa Barracks.
The remaining three suspects are civilians believed to be part of the group.
Investigators said the suspects were arrested on March 25, 2026, in Kitengela after a week long surveillance operation based on intelligence that a group was planning to rob the residence of a senior KDF officer.
Police told the court that the suspects were arrested while using two vehicles,a Toyota Harrier and a Toyota Ractis and that a search recovered items including jungle uniforms, military boots, a crowbar, a knife, a claw hammer, pliers, tyre seals and several mobile phones.
Police suspect the group had “planned to carry out a robbery with violence and believe a firearm, suspected to be an AK-47 rifle, may be in the possession of the suspects or their accomplices who are still at large.”
The DCI told the court that the investigations are complex and require a multi-agency approach, particularly because some of the suspects are linked to the military and the complainant is a senior KDF officer.
Investigators said they need more time to verify the military status of the suspects with military headquarters, conduct searches at their residences, interrogate them and trace other suspects who are still at large.
Police also argued that the suspects could interfere with witnesses, tamper with evidence or abscond if released at this stage.
The court allowed the application and granted police 10 days to detain the six suspects as investigations continue.
