Rape Suspect Escapes Custody at Kesses Police Station, Manhunt Underway

A 22-year-old rape suspect escaped from lawful custody at Kesses Police Station in Uasin Gishu County on Sunday afternoon, prompting a police manhunt.

The suspect, identified as Cyrus Kibet, was being escorted to the station’s latrine in the evening when he attacked one of the officers on duty.

A police constable who was part of the escort team was struck with a plastic bucket, allowing the suspect to escape.

In what appeared to be a swift and coordinated move, Kibet ran towards a motorcycle that had been waiting for him approximately 50 metres from the station.

He boarded the motorcycle, whose registration number was not captured, and fled in the direction of Lessos.

Police officers immediately launched a pursuit but were unable to re-arrest the suspect, who remains at large.

The escape came just a day before Kibet was scheduled to appear in court to face rape charges.

According to reports, the suspect is alleged to have committed the offence after the complainant, a 20-year-old woman, reported the incident to police.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the escape may have been aided, given the presence of the waiting motorcycle.
