Bishop, Politician and Preacher: The Journey of Lurambi MP Titus Khamala

By Our Reporter,Kakamega

Few Kenyan politicians have successfully balanced the demanding roles of serving in Parliament while simultaneously leading a thriving church.

Lurambi MP Bishop Titus Khamala is among the rare exceptions.

As the founder and overseer of Cornerstone Ministries in Kakamega, Khamala has spent decades preaching the Gospel while also representing the people of Lurambi in the National Assembly.

Bishop Khamala founded Cornerstone Ministries in the early 1990’s after receiving what he has often described as a divine calling to spread the Gospel.

Starting with a small fellowship in Kakamega, the ministry has steadily grown into a respected Pentecostal church with branches across western Kenya and a congregation numbering in thousands.

Through evangelistic crusades, revival meetings, discipleship programmes and community outreach, the church has become a significant force in advancing Christianity in western Kenya while extending its ministry to other parts of the country.

Apart from regular worship services, Cornerstone Ministries has invested heavily in evangelism, youth mentorship, family counselling and charitable activities that have strengthened Christian values within communities.

The ministry has hosted numerous Gospel crusades and conferences, helping nurture pastors and church leaders who now serve in different parts of Kenya.

Khamala’s ministry has also taken him beyond Kenya’s borders.

Over the years, he has preached in neighbouring East African countries and attended international Christian conferences where he has shared messages on faith, servant leadership and national transformation, although comprehensive records of all his overseas missions have not been publicly documented as sought by DNK-International

He was born in Kakamega County in 1970.

He received his formal education in Kenya before pursuing theological studies that prepared him for pastoral ministry.

While he has frequently spoken about his ministerial training and calling, detailed public information regarding the specific theological institutions he attended has remained limited.

His preaching frequently draws from scriptures that emphasise faith, humility, righteousness and service to humanity.

Among the Bible chapters and verses he regularly references are Proverbs 3:5-6, Matthew 6:33 and Romans 8:28, encouraging believers to trust God while remaining diligent in serving society.

Politically, Bishop Khamala has carved out a unique space.

First he began as a youth winger during the days of FORD KENYA and later on he served as a nominated Councillor serving between 2003-2007

Bishop Khamala was first elected as Lurambi MP in 2017, he successfully defended his seat in 2022 on an ODM ticket after previously serving under ANC.

Today, he remains one of the few ODM legislators who openly support President William Ruto’s bid for a second term in office.

Khamala argues that development should take precedence over partisan politics, insisting that leaders should work with the national government regardless of party affiliation to deliver projects to wananchi.

His position has occasionally attracted criticism from sections of the opposition, but he maintains that Christianity teaches unity, dialogue and service rather than political hostility.

He often says the Church should be a bridge that promotes peace instead of division.

As both Bishop and legislator, Khamala has consistently maintained that politics and religion are not mutually exclusive.

He believes spiritual values such as honesty, integrity and compassion should guide public leadership.

His sermons frequently remind leaders that authority ultimately belongs to God and should be exercised responsibly.

Known for his humorous yet direct style of communication, Bishop Khamala has delivered several memorable remarks over the years.

He has repeatedly urged Kenyans to “put God first in every decision,” while politically encouraging leaders to focus on development rather than endless campaigns.

His colourful public speaking style has made him one of the country’s most recognisable cleric-politicians.

As he prepares to seek a third term as Lurambi MP in the 2027 General Election, Khamala says he wants to complete ongoing development programmes and expand economic opportunities for young people and women.

Among the achievements he cites are improved road infrastructure, expansion of electricity connectivity, support for education through bursaries, construction and upgrading of classrooms, improved access to water projects and continuous empowerment programmes targeting youth and women’s groups.

Supporters describe him as an approachable leader whose church background has shaped his commitment to community service, while critics continue to question his political alliances.

Nevertheless, Bishop Titus Khamala remains one of Kenya’s most distinctive public figures,a man who continues to preach from the pulpit while debating legislation in Parliament, blending faith and public service in a way few leaders have managed to sustain.

His dual role continues to make him a notable figure in both Kenya’s religious and political landscapes.
