Former Othaya MP Gichuki Mugambi is among the politicians positioning themselves for the Nyeri gubernatorial race in the 2027 General Election.
He’s seeking to contest the seat on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Democratic Congress Party (DCP) after defecting from Jubilee party formerly led by ex President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Many residents remember Gichuki Mugambi as the Member of Parliament for Othaya Constituency between 2017 and 2022.
However, his career spans several decades and has included senior positions in corporate finance, community development and public leadership.
Before entering elective politics, Mugambi built a career in financial management, serving in senior finance positions in the private sector.
Among the organisations where he worked were Laborex Kenya Ltd and CMC Motors Group Kenya, now part of CFAO East Africa.
His transition from corporate management to public service was gradual.
He became involved in constituency development through the Othaya Development Association (ODA), where he served as chairman and development strategist.

His work with the association brought him into close contact with government agencies, local leaders and development partners as he sought to facilitate projects and address development needs in Othaya.
Working alongside Mwai Kibaki
Mugambi’s association with former President Kibaki, who represented Othaya in Parliament for several years before becoming Head of State, also became an important part of his political career.

According to accounts of his supporters who talked to DailyNewsKenya-International, Mugambi played a significant role in coordinating constituency development activities during the period when Kibaki was serving as President.
In this capacity, he was involved in following up on development projects and working with government institutions on behalf of Othaya residents.
The experience gave him exposure to public administration and constituency level development, experience that would later inform his decision to seek elective office.
Following Kibaki’s retirement from elective politics, Mugambi sought to succeed him as Othaya MP in the 2013 elections but was unsuccessful.
Four years later, he returned to the political contest and won the Othaya parliamentary seat in the 2017 General Election, securing a decisive victory.
During his five year tenure in the National Assembly, Mugambi served on the Budget and Appropriations Committee and rose to the position of vice chairman.

The committee is central to Parliament’s consideration of the national government’s budget and expenditure proposals.
Mugambi used his parliamentary position to advocate for infrastructure and other development projects in Othaya, according to accounts of his tenure.
His experience in finance and accounting also provided a professional background relevant to parliamentary discussions on public expenditure and resource allocation.
After serving as MP from 2017 to 2022, Mugambi left Parliament but has remained active in public and political affairs.
Mugambi is now seeking to shift his political focus from constituency representation to county leadership.
His proposed bid for the Nyeri governorship in 2027 places him among politicians seeking to influence the county’s next phase of development.
The gubernatorial position carries responsibility for the management of devolved county functions, including county health services, agriculture, local infrastructure and other functions assigned to county governments under the Constitution.
For Mugambi, his campaign is likely to draw on his combination of private sector financial management, community development experience and previous service in Parliament.
The 2027 contest is expected to attract several aspirants, with issues such as economic development, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, employment and management of county resources likely to feature prominently in the political debate.
Mugambi has an academic background in accounting and finance.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting, First Class Honours, from the University of Nairobi.
He is also a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (CPA-K) and a Certified Public Secretary of Kenya (CPS-K), qualifications administered through the Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (KASNEB).
His educational journey included Meru School, where he undertook A-Level studies, and Othaya Boys High School, where he completed his O-Level education.
From corporate boardrooms to community development and Parliament, Mugambi’s career has followed a path that combines finance, administration and politics.
As the 2027 gubernatorial race takes shape, his record in the private sector, his years of involvement in Othaya’s development affairs and his five year tenure in Parliament are likely to form a significant part of the public discussion surrounding his bid for the Nyeri governorship.
