Ken Obura bodyguard gun goes off accidentally at Kisumu Airport

A bodyguard attached to a senior officer attached to the Office of the Deputy President Ken Obura (pictured) accidentally fired his pistol while handling the firearm at Kisumu Airport, causing panic among some passengers.

Corporal Kelvin Abongo, who serves as the bodyguard of Obura, Head of Programmes in the Office of the Deputy President, had arrived at Kisumu Airport aboard Kenya Airways flight on Friday evening.

According to a police report, the incident occurred at around 6:30pm when Abongo was collecting his Jericho pistol and conducting routine safety procedures inside the temporary arms-hold cubicle.

The firearm accidentally discharged one round of ammunition, with the bullet hitting a sandbag kept inside the cubicle.

The sound of the gunshot caused alarm among some passengers at the airport, although they were later assured that they were safe after the situation was brought under control.

Police said no one was injured in the incident and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge were ongoing.
