Landslide cut off section of Kipkelion railway line

By Our Correspondent,Kipkelion.

A section of the railway line near Kipkelion in Kisumu County has been rendered impassable following a major landslide triggered by ongoing heavy rains.

According to a report from the Kenya Railways and Ports Police Unit, the incident occurred yesterday evening at Kilometer 112/2 from Kipkelion Railway Station towards the Kisumu tunnel direction.

Police and railway officials who visited the scene confirmed that a large portion of the railway line had been compromised.

A deep hole developed at the site, leaving sections of the sleepers suspended in the air, making it unsafe for train operations.

Police attributed the landslide to persistent heavy rainfall currently being experienced in the area, which has weakened the ground structure along the railway corridor.

No injuries or fatalities were reported during the incident.

Officials also indicated that there was no immediate danger to nearby communities as debris from the landslide was being carried downstream by a nearby river.

Railway staff have already assessed the situation, with repair works scheduled to begin today.

A detailed evaluation of the extent of damage is expected to be conducted as restoration efforts get underway.
