Pastor Elizabeth Mokoro: The Outspoken SDA preacher who defends marriage and family values

By Our Correspondent, Kisii

Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) preacher Pastor Elizabeth Ouma-Mokoro remains a recognisable voice in Kenya’s religious circles, known for her bold sermons on marriage, family life, parenting and Christian values.

Mokoro attracted attention in July 2024 when the SDA Church’s Kenya Coast Field withdrew a directive barring her and four other religious leaders from conducting church services.

The withdrawal was communicated by Kenya Coast Field Executive Secretary Pastor Eliab Ombuoro, although the church did not publicly explain the reasons for the original directive.

Marriage remains one of the central themes of Mokoro’s teachings.

She has consistently encouraged young women to consider marriage early, arguing that relationships require preparation, commitment and spiritual guidance.

“Do not take so much time to get married,” she advised young women, warning against indefinitely postponing marriage while pursuing academic and professional achievements.

She has also challenged men to prepare for family responsibilities before pursuing relationships.
“Sasa wewe huna kazi, huna nyumba na unakimbiza young adults,” she remarked, questioning why men without jobs or homes would pursue young women without considering their readiness for marriage.

On infidelity, Mokoro has urged women to think carefully before ending their marriages because of other women.

“Don’t jump out of your marriage because you have heard there is some girl somewhere,” she said, emphasising the importance of protecting marital commitments.

Her views have drawn mixed reactions, with supporters praising her defence of marriage while critics argue that such advice should also recognise the experiences of single mothers and women facing difficult or unhealthy relationships.

Mokoro has also criticised excessive wedding expenditure.

Preaching at Kisii New Life SDA Church in March a few years back, she cautioned couples against taking loans to finance expensive ceremonies.

“It’s better a broken engagement than broken marriage,” she said, urging couples to prioritise building a stable home over lavish celebrations.

On parenting, she challenged parents who make children feel guilty about the cost of their upbringing.

“They did not ask to be born,” she remarked, urging parents to take responsibility for their children’s welfare without using school fees and other expenses to shame them.

Her sermons as established by Daily News Kenya-International have been associated with several SDA congregations, including Kisii Central SDA Church, Kisii New Life SDA Church and Nairobi Central SDA Church.

For her supporters, Mokoro is a preacher who speaks frankly about issues others may avoid.

Her critics, however, believe some of her teachings on marriage risk placing undue pressure on women to marry at a particular age.

Her public profile reflects a wider debate about the role of religious leaders in shaping attitudes towards marriage, parenting and family responsibility.

Whether admired for her directness or criticised for her uncompromising views, Pastor Elizabeth Ouma-Mokoro remains a distinctive voice in Kenya’s religious landscape.
