Presidential Escort Officer Found Dead by Suicide at PEU Residential Camp in Ruiru

A police officer attached to the Presidential Escort Unit (PEU) has died by suicide at the PEU residential lines in Ruiru, Kiambu County.

According to a police report, the incident was reported at Kays Police Station at about 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Police Constable Dennis Kibet Cheruiyot, 30.

Police said the officer allegedly shot himself at around 5:10 a.m. inside a House within the PEU residential camp.

Senior officers, led by Deputy Commandant George Kirera, visited the scene alongside detectives and crime scene investigators.

The officer was found lying on his bed with a gunshot wound.

His service issued Jericho pistol was recovered at the scene together with two magazines and ammunition.

Investigators also recovered an expended cartridge and the bullet head.

Police further reported that a three page note believed to have been written by the deceased was found beside him.

Police said the note outlined his personal concerns and wishes, and it has been taken as part of the investigation.

Crime scene personnel documented the scene before the body was moved to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital mortuary for preservation pending an autopsy.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Juja has launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
