A member of the Somalia National Army has been arrested in Mandera after crossing into Kenya without authorisation to purchase miraa.
Police said the 35 year old suspect, identified as Bishar Abdi Telmoi, was arrested on Monday afternoon by officers on routine patrol along the BP1 Road.
During a search, officers recovered a Somalia National Army military badge from the suspect.
Upon questioning, he reportedly admitted that he was a serving soldier in the Somalia National Army and had crossed into Kenya to buy miraa before returning to Somalia.
The suspect was taken into police custody, where he was reported to be in normal condition as authorities initiated verification procedures.
Police notified the Officer Commanding the Border Post, who confirmed the suspect’s identity.
Authorities said a liaison officer from the Somalia National Army was expected to travel to Mandera to collect him after the verification process is completed.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Mandera East is handling the matter.
