Students go on rampage at Kitui school over phone surrender

Students at St John’s Kwa Mulungu High School in Matinyani,Kitui County, went on a rampage on Friday evening damaging school property after being asked to surrender mobile phones in their possession.

According to a police report recorded at Kathivo Police Station, the unrest began at around 7.00 pm when students reportedly started throwing stones at teachers and breaking windows in the staffroom and classrooms.

Deputy Principal Elizabeth Nzau reported the incident to police, prompting officers from Kathivo Police Station to rush to the school and contain the situation.

However,about 45 students reportedly fled the school compound during the unrest.

Several windows were broken during the incident, but no injuries were reported.

Police said officers remained on high alert as efforts continued to maintain calm and prevent further disturbances.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to be investigated.
