Police in Tetu,Nyeri county are investigating an incident in which a butcher operating at Gachatha Trading Centre was allegedly duped with counterfeit currency after selling beef worth Sh8 100 to two men.
According to a police report recorded at Gachatha Police Post on Friday night,the complainant, identified as Kelvin Nyoro Mathenge, a businessman operating Stage Butchery, reported that a customer entered his premises and purchased 12 kilogrammes of beef valued at Sh8,100.
The customer then asked the butcher to accompany him to his vehicle, which was parked about 20 metres from the butchery, and carried Sh900 as change.
At the vehicle, a silver Nissan Wingroad registration number KDU 498G, the customer reportedly approached the passenger door, while another man remained seated in the driver’s seat.
The customer handed the complainant Sh11,000 and received Sh2,000 in return.
He was given the 12 kilogrammes of beef and Sh900 as change before the vehicle drove off towards the Giakanja-Nyeri route.
The complainant reportedly discovered moments later that the nine Sh1,000 notes he had received were counterfeit.
The nine suspected fake banknotes were kept as exhibits as detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Tetu, took up the matter for further investigations.
Police are pursuing leads to establish the identities of the suspects and recover the vehicle involved in the incident.
