A postmortem examination has confirmed that Gideon Makau Mbandi (pictured) aged 45, who died while in police custody at Nunguni Police Post in Kilungu, Makueni County, died by suicide through hanging.
The examination was conducted on Thursday, at Kilungu Sub-county Hospital by a team led by Chief Government Pathologist Dr Grace Midigo.
Other pathologists present included Dr Michieka from the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU), Dr Kennedy Mule representing Makueni County, and Dr Muendo from Kilungu Sub-county Hospital.
According to police, Dr Michieka and Dr Mule also represented the deceased’s family during the exercise.
Officers from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), led by Ibrahim Shinu, were present to witness the procedure.
The team concluded that the cause of death was asphyxia due to neck compression, consistent with hanging.
Mbandi had earlier been reported to have taken his own life inside the cells at Nunguni Police Post using a pair of long trousers.
Following the examination, the doctors briefed members of the deceased’s family outside the hospital mortuary on the findings.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death remain ongoing and are being jointly handled by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kilungu and IPOA.
