Three men suspected of belonging to an organised criminal gang accused of extorting money from matatu operators and passengers have been arrested in Busia during a multi-agency security operation.
The suspects were arrested by a team comprising officers from the Kenya Police Service (KPS), the Administration Police Service (APS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following a crackdown targeting criminal gangs operating at Korinda Stage along the Kisumu–Busia Highway.
Police said the trio, who worked as touts, are said to have threatened and intimidated matatu drivers and passengers while demanding money from them on July 27.
The incident was reported at Busia Police Station, prompting investigations that led to their arrest.
The suspects were identified as Dennis Ombati Ochwang, 42, Daniel Ekwenye Otieno, 42, and John Mugo Gakero, 45.
According to police, the three are being processed for the offence of being members of an organised criminal gang.
Detectives from the DCI in Busia are handling the case as investigations continue.
Police said the operation forms part of an ongoing crackdown on criminal gangs disrupting public transport operations and intimidating motorists and commuters in the area.
