A law student at Chuka university has been charged with an offence of allegedly publishing offensive information in his Tiktok account against the head of state.
The accused Hesbon Mauti Thomas was arraigned before trial Magistrate Geoffrey Onsaringo where he denied the criminal charge levelled against him by the prosecution.
The accused had previously admitted the offence but he later changed after his lawyers Danstan Omari, Cliff Ombeta and Shadrach Wamboi pleaded with the court to the effect that the accused did not understand the charges levelled against him.
The lawyers told the court that since the accused was not represented he didn’t get proper advice before pleading to the charges.
The prosecution told the court that the accused had committed the offense on June 25, 2026 when he posted the offending information on his Tiktok account.
The lawyers submitted that the accused is an orphan who is being sponsored by a church in undertaking studies at the university.
They urged the court to release him on a linient bail terms in order to secure his release pending trial.
The court consequently ordered the accused to deposit a cashbail of Sh 5 000 and further directed the matter to be mentioned on August 18 for pretrial.
