A police officer was seriously injured and a G3 rifle damaged after a wanted man attacked officers during an attempted arrest at Murumba area in Butula, Busia County.
According to a police report filed at Murumba Police Post, officers from Bumala Police Station were deployed on Sunday, September after the post requested reinforcement to arrest Stephen Ouma Okinda aged 36 who was wanted in connection with an assault on his father.
Police said Okinda had previously threatened officers with a panga when they visited his home on September 23 to arrest him.
During Sunday’s operation, Okinda attacked Police Constable Foustine Atinya, inflicting two deep cuts on the left side of the officer’s head.
The officers responded by firing several rounds.
Atinya was first treated at Pamako Medical Centre while in serious condition before being transferred to Life Care Bungoma for specialised treatment.
During the confrontation, Okinda cut a G3 rifle issued to Constable Kelvin Chacha, into two pieces.
The suspect was eventually subdued and arrested before being taken into custody at Bumala Police Station.
The case is being handled by the Bumala police station investigations team.
