A seasoned tax administrator and policy expert, Dr. Lilian Nyawanda has stepped into the spotlight as the Acting Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
This follows the exit of Humphrey Wattanga and it marks a significant leadership transition in one of Kenya’s most critical state agencies.
Dr. Nyawanda, whose exact age is not publicly disclosed, is widely regarded as one of the most experienced figures within KRA.
She has built a distinguished career spanning customs administration, tax policy, and international trade.
Prior to her elevation, she served as Commissioner for Customs and Border Control, one of the authority’s most strategic departments responsible for revenue mobilisation at Kenya’s entry points and facilitating cross border trade.
Her academic background reflects a strong foundation in finance, leadership, and public policy.

She holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) degree from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Business Administration (Strategic Management) from the United States International University (USIU).
Dr.Nyawanda also obtained a certificate in Customs and Tax Administration from the Kenya School of Revenue Administration.
Further strengthening her credentials, she earned a Doctorate in Public Policy and Administration from Walden University, cementing her status as a scholar practitioner in governance and fiscal management.
Dr. Nyawanda’s journey within KRA has been defined by steady progression through senior technical and leadership roles.
Beyond her tenure in Customs and Border Control, she has also served on secondment at the National Treasury of Kenya, where she contributed to fiscal planning and policy formulation.
Her experience cuts across the public sector, private sector, and academia, giving her a multidimensional perspective on revenue systems both locally and across the African region.
Her appointment as Acting Commissioner General follows a decision by the KRA Board not to renew Wattanga’s contract, paving the way for internal leadership continuity.
In her new role, Dr. Nyawanda now oversees the agency mandated to assess, collect, and account for government revenue,a function central to Kenya’s economic stability and development agenda.

Colleagues and observers who talked to DNK-International credit her with driving key reforms in customs administration, including initiatives aimed at enhancing border efficiency, strengthening compliance, and boosting revenue collection.
Her tenure in Customs and Border Control has been described as instrumental in aligning trade facilitation with national development priorities.
Beyond her professional achievements, her rise carries symbolic weight.
As a woman ascending to the top of a major revenue authority in a traditionally male dominated field, her appointment sends a powerful signal for gender inclusion in leadership.
For young women in Kenya and across Africa, her rise underscores the value of education, persistence, and expertise in breaking institutional barriers.
In public engagements, Dr. Nyawanda has portrayed herself as a leader driven by purpose and impact, once describing herself as “a scholar” with a passion for influencing public policy and governance,an outlook that mirrors her academic and professional alignment.
Her appointment now places her at the center of Kenya’s fiscal future, with expectations high that she will sustain revenue growth, deepen reforms, and steer KRA through an evolving economic landscape.
For many, her leadership is not just a transition, but a defining moment for technocratic excellence and women’s leadership in public service.
