A long distance truck driver was abducted and robbed in a well coordinated early morning attack that has left police in two counties pursuing a dangerous gang behind the disappearance of a lorry loaded with scrap metal worth Sh sixmillions.
According to a report filed at Mosocho Police Station yesterday,the incident occurred yesterday morning when Timothy Mutwiri was transporting the goods from Busia to Nairobi.
Police say that upon reaching Sabatia town in Butere, Kakamega County, the driver encountered four men who had blocked the road.
One of the suspects was armed with a pistol.
In a swift and calculated move, two unarmed attackers boarded the lorry,an Isuzu FRR registration number KDP 415D and forcibly removed Mutwiri from the vehicle.
He was then handed over to the armed accomplice, who handcuffed him and robbed him of his mobile phone (Tecno Camon 15) and Sh 101,000 in cash.
The gang then bundled the driver into a getaway vehicle described as a Toyota Axio with no visible registration number and drove him to Mosocho River site in Kisii County, where he was later dumped.
Disoriented but unharmed, Mutwiri reported the matter to Mosocho Police Station, stating that he could not account for the whereabouts of his lorry or the high value cargo.
Police officers visited the scene where the victim had been abandoned as investigations intensified.
The case has since been handed over to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kitutu Central, with officers actively pursuing leads to recover the stolen vehicle and apprehend the suspects.
Police suspect the robbery may have been premeditated and executed by an organized criminal network targeting transporters of high-value goods along major transit routes.
Investigations remain ongoing.
