By Our Correspondent,Huruma.

A 14 year old boy was injured yesterday after police officers opened fire while escaping a violent mob in Huruma, Nairobi during an attempted arrest of robbery suspects.

According to police report at Huruma Police Station, the incident occurred at around 5:00 p.m. when detectives from the DCI Githurai office had tracked a robbery with violence suspect to a shop along Starehe Road within Huruma area.

Three officers managed to arrest and handcuff three suspects.

However, as they attempted to leave the scene, they were confronted by a large, rowdy crowd.

Members of the public, some armed with crude weapons, reportedly began pelting the officers with stones and forcefully freed the suspects from police custody.

With the situation escalating and their safety at risk, the officers fired warning shots in the air to disperse the crowd and escaped in different directions.

During the chaos one of the officers sustained bruises on the shoulder and soft tissue injuries on his right thumb and left leg while another one suffered a swollen head and a bruised right shoulder.

Moments later, reports emerged that a Grade 8 pupil, identified as Lawrence Mbaruku, had been shot in the leg.

He was rushed to MSF Hospital where he received treatment and was reported to be in fair condition.

Meanwhile, undercover officers on patrol in the area later intercepted two individuals still in handcuffs who were attempting to flee.

The suspects, identified as Mazeras Okoth and Isac Nderitu, were re-arrested and taken to Huruma Police Station, where they remain in custody.

Police have launched further investigations into the incident, now being handled by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Starehe.
